Making your power perfect

powerPerfector Australia is company with a solution that offers tangible savings for its clients. They supply Voltage Power Optimisation (VPO) – a proven technology that helps cut down on unnecessary power consumption.

Most electronics are designed to run on 220v of electricity, but the supply from the power company is about 20 per cent more than that, ranging from about 242v to 253v. That means that not only is your bill going to be higher than it needs to be, but the life expectancy of the electronic equipment on the grid is decreased because it is being stressed consistently beyond its design limits.

powerPerfector estimates that it can save its clients that 20 per cent in costs, and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint by 15 per cent.

Paul Doig, the COO of powerPerfector Australia, recounts the history of the company. He says it was formed by himself, and Directors Rod Hazelton and Bill Sawtell. They had all met while working at a different company, “in a previous life,” Mr Doig jokes. They quickly found that they had similar idea and goals, and that they worked well as a team.

“We had a great experience working together, and we were fortunate enough to come across Voltage Power Optimisation on the Gold Coast,” Mr Doig recalls.

The technology was originally licensed to another company, but eventually the license for the exclusive use of the product came up for tender in both Australia and New Zealand.

“We were able to put together a very good business plan and went to Japan and we were fortunate enough to win the license – and so here we are.”

The company was originally called Exact Energy Australia, but when the product was bought by a UK firm and renamed powerPerfector, they realigned their branding to leverage what had become a well-known global brand.

Across the country

The powerPerfector solution is valuable because it guarantees energy, cost and carbon savings by efficiently optimising a building’s electrical supply. powerPerfector Australia delivers this technology, and backs it up with an appraisal, project management, engineering and evaluation process.

According to Mr Doig, one of the key benefits to marketing this technology is that their customer base can be literally anyone who gets a power bill. The only hurdle is the cost of the product and the cost of importing it, which means that – for the time being – their main clientele consists of large energy consumers.

“We have supermarkets, clubs, hotels, certain manufactures, fast food outlets, and shopping centre,” says Mr Doig.

One of the company’s clients is the large supermarket chain, Coles – so the geographic spread has become enormous.

“This has let us put in our technology into pretty much every suburb in the country. There are certainly installed units in every state and territory,” Mr Doig explains.

Building knowledge

Because their technology is a relatively new one, powerPerfector has to overcome a knowledge gap when it comes to their customers. Mr Doig says they overcome this gap by making education the first step in their sales process. They build relationships with clients by explaining upfront what the product is, and what it can do for them.

“The units do more than just save money on energy, but we do understand that this is a key driver for business,” Mr Doig explains. “Between assessing the site that a unit is to be installed – all the units are purpose built for the site – there is a delay, so we have to work with the client to ready the site. This process can take up to six months to complete.”

“There is a lot of time and effort put in by our team, and this is not a one person job,” he continues. “So over time, we are able to develop long lasting and trusting relationships with our clients. This is not your typical sales cycle – we’re not just walking in and walking out.”

Mr Doig adds that at powerPerfector, they don’t look at the length of the process as a hindrance – they look at it as an opportunity to deepen the ties they have with their clients.

The powerPerfector team at this time consists of 15 individuals spread across three offices in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Each step of their sales process is carried out by the entire team, and when it comes to the installation of the product, subcontractors are brought on to deliver on this final step.

“These are immensely qualified and powerPerfector-approved contractors. Working with this technology really does require a certain level of expertise, so we go to great lengths that our contractors are knowledgeable in this area,” says Mr Doig.

“When you have people moving a one tonne unit around for installation you need to have people who know what they are doing,” he adds.

Setting themselves apart

Though there are other VPO products on the market, Mr Doig says that powerPerfector’s technology is set apart because its engineered purpose from day one has always been power saving, whereas others have modified products that were not initially designed for that purpose. Having a custom built product rather than an adapted one puts powerPerfector ahead of the game right from the start.

This key difference – along with the hard work of powerPerfector’s dedicated team – has been recognised by the industry and those who report on it. Recently, BRW recognised powerPerfector Australia as No. 2 on their 2013 list of Fast Starters. What made them stand out to BRW was their posted revenue of $34 million in 2012, which was a 600 per cent increase on the previous year.

“We have only been going for four years, and we all really believe in the product and believe that it has a great benefit to both our customers and the environment,” says Mr Doig, who highly values the recognition.

“To be recognised by the BRW and the industry for hard work and for the product is extremely rewarding. We put in long hard hours, and your family has to put up with that, and to come home and show them that we are doing a great job and are being recognised out in the business world, and it just goes to show the uniqueness that we have with the powerPerfector.”
