Finding the right fit for their services
All Metal Products has been in the business of providing light metal fabricated products to the Australian economy since 1962. The company started with two brothers, Gil and Piet Kommer. At that time, the grocery industry was undergoing the change from corner store grocers to the self service supermarket, and the company produced large quantities of shopfitting and storage products in support of this trend such as wire shelving and steel transport crates.
By 1966 the company had grown from 350 sq meters factory space to over 2000 sq meters and employed 45 workers. The product range was continually expanding and by 1985 the company provided for over 100 employees with a substantial manufacturing capacity in wire, sheetmetal, tubular steel and powder coated products. Products included super market shelving, filtration cages, steel pallets, display stands, light guards, laboratory ware amongst many other others, and the factory premises expanded to 8500 sq meters. In 1998 All Metal Products started to undergo more competition from overseas, especially China, and by 2007 this competition was so active that the workforce had shrunk to 55. The company had to readjust their priorities. Management realised that the Australian wages and conditions had made the local industry uncompetitive against the larger overseas manufacturers and the decision was made to focus more on smaller quantities and quick delivery time.
Often All Metal Products is involved in the manufacture of one-off prototypes knowing full well that the big orders are awarded to the overseas suppliers because of the cheaper prices offered. The year of 2011 has seen cost increases across the whole spectrum of suppliers including steel, plastics, electropolishing and waste removal of between 7-15%. Council rates have increased by 6% and electricity in 2009-2011 by 42%.
Managing Director Gil Kommer is not happy about the Carbon Tax and is fearful that its overall impact will make All Metal Products even less competitive against imports. His comments are “I am in agreement with Sir Winston Churchill’s assertion that we cannot tax a country into prosperity. My current view in July 2011 is that the future of small to medium manufacturers in Australia is not as bright as we would like to see it”.
All Metal Products is currently one of the largest operations of its kind in Australia, producing for almost every Australian industry, from customised computer systems cabinets and retail displays to specialised medical furniture, pollution control devices and air ventilation components. Most of the production is done completely in-house. All Metal Products has built a longstanding reputation as a competitive, reliable and highly ethical supplier of quality product; able to deliver with rapid turnaround and outstanding service.
