Leaders in facades
Erincole Building Services (EBS) is an industry leader in the installation and fixing of new façade products. They have serviced the Canberra region for more than 20 years, and in that time they have continuously innovated and refined their skills. Today, they have a well-earned reputation for completing projects on time, on budget, and to high quality standards.
“Our goal is to exceed the expectations of every client,” says Craig Richards, Director of the company. “We do that by offering innovation, flexibility and value for money. That’s how we’ve built our reputation, and that’s how we maintain it.”
Craig has been personally working in the building industry since 1978, when he started as a domestic carpenter in regional ACT. He came to Canberra roughly five years into his career, where he continued to earn valuable hands-on experience as a trade carpenter. In 1992, he put that that experience to use by joining up with his brother and father and establishing EBS.
When the business began, the Richards family were still working as carpenters for commercial clients. Soon after, they moved into the fit-out field, before finally evolving into doing external work. Over the years, EBS has grown to become 50 employees strong, and now delivers high quality façade products on a full time basis.
Today, Erincole Building Services primarily works in Canberra and the surrounding area. Their workload tends to consist of the more “complex and difficult jobs.” According to Craig, they embrace the kind of challenges that other contractors try to shy away from.
“All our employees are trained carpenters,” he says. “We all come from a carpentry background, and we’ve all been tested. We believe in gaining hands-on experience, and we’re always improving. We believe if we don’t know how to do something, that just means we need to learn.”
That level of commitment is what sets EBS apart in the market, Craig says. That is what has earned them the loyalty of their many longstanding customers, including high profile names like Lend Lease, Leightons, and Construction Control – companies they have been dealing with for more than 10 years. In the case of Construction Control, those years have been particularly productive, as Craig says they are teamed up on a project at least “90 per cent of the time.”
Craig further credits the strength of his client relationships to his personal service. As a Director, he works full time, and puts in many hours on-site on all of the company’s projects. He also liaises closely with the managers of his client’s teams to ensure their needs are always being met.
“There’s a hands-on, face-to-face, ongoing relationship with customers,” he says. “I’m not coming in and out, as some other managers do. I’m hands-on the whole time.”
Being personally involved on a day-to-day basis also helps Craig motivate his team members – many of whom are longstanding, and as dedicated to the company’s success as he is. Some of those team members have grown from apprentices through to leading hands and junior foreman, and are now running million dollar projects for the company. Even the apprentices who move on to multi-national companies tend to stay in contact with Craig and his brother, and often end up working alongside them on future jobs.
“Our foremen are highly sought after,” Craig says. “We know how to train them to run jobs, and properly communicate with other people. Those skills are valued pretty highly in this industry, and our guys have them.”
Erincole Building Services’ history of quality has been repeatedly rewarded by industry bodies such as the MBA. In 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, their hard work was recognised with the MBA Award for External Building Facades. The company was also named ACT Subcontractor of the Year in 2007, 2008.
At the 2013 MBA Awards, the company added to their long list of accolades and continued their legacy of awards success. They received another Building Façade award for their work on the Women and Childrens Hospital in Canberra, and they also took home another coveted overall Subcontractor of the year Award.
“We’re very proud to get that recognition,” Craig says. “It shows that the quality of our work really lives up to our reputation. Our clients take notice, and it gives them confidence that we’re the best choice.”
Craig says the company’s award-winning consistency goes back to the personal involvement of the management team, and the close eye they are always keeping on quality.
“We’re hands-on, we’re there every day, and we’re overseeing the project,” he says. “We check and we double check and we make sure we get the job done right.”
Craig further credits EBS’ award-winning results to the focus they have placed on training.
“The work we do is very specific,” he says. “It’s like joinery – we work within the millimetre. To achieve that sort of finesse, you need to be trained, and you need to know what you’re doing. And if you’re working for Erincole, you need to care about quality.”
Moving forward, Craig says EBS will continue to achieve that same level of quality – because customers expect it, and they never want to let a customer down.
As far as growth is concerned, Craig says the plan is to expand the business a little bit more, and take on more jobs regionally. They also want to bring on a few more guys, and promote some of the guys they currently have in their ranks.
“Most of all, we just want to keep being good quality contract carpenters,” Craig concludes. “We want to deliver on time, on budget every time, and have a satisfied customer. We want to get that phone call back, and that follow-up job. We want customers to ring us and ask ‘Are you busy?’ Because they trust us, and they know we can get their job done right.”
